Myths Surrounding the Net |
While everyone has known Importance and benefits of Internet, Much of it is Hype than reality. However, the truth cannot be denied that Internet is important for business, even Industrial and small business. However Industries and small business, especially those located outside Europe and USA remain sceptical about it and are not as strongly represented on the internet, as they should have been. This article will try to alley the myths, once again underline the importance of the internet and web site and guide through the step by step procedure for making your presence on the internet with special focus on the Industry and small business.
It may be for some countries due to high exchange rate for dollars, it is still the cheapest form of marketing. Another fact is you can actually have everything on the net for FREE, though this is not the best way or the suggested way. There are Web sites that actually offer Free sub domain name, web site hosting and have so easy online page designing software’s for novices, that you can actually have your pages for free, not counting the cost of Internet connection, if you are ready to work out your web pages for yourself. Although they will not be as good and effective as paid sites, they will be better than having no net presence at all. Alternatively, you can avail some of their services and buy the rest for which you think you can pay for. For e.g. You can avail the facility of subdomain name, something like: www.space-provider.com/yourname or yourname.space-provider.com, use their free space and get someone local to design and maintain your website. The catch, Your free space provider will display ads on your pages to generate revenue.
Mine is an Industrial Product, it doesn't sell without personal contact
Well, It is true that most of the industrial and small business products don't sell without personal contact. But you have to reach out to new customers and inform them about possible choices. You probably have been doing this through mails, phones, direct contact, exhibitions or even advertisements in relevant trade and business magazines (If not though than this article is probably aimed at your competitor who is laughing at you to the bank and you need some crash course on business Management and marketing). The Order may not come through the net, but enquiry can come, which you may pursue in the manner you think your customer may prefer and that could include personal contact. The Fact remains that many of the Purchasing departments around the world are taking a look at the companies on the net for their requirements along with other mediums and shortlisting the net companies along with their traditional resources.
My Distributor takes care of marketing - It is his job or he may not be comfortable with my web site
If you want to be so dependent on him, don't complain when he fails to deliver on some occasion or tries to blackmail you when you need him the most. Every component of business has his importance. Your dealer or distributor may be the most important element of your business, but choices of distributors is even more important. He also has his limitations. If you don't have more distributors in wide and far places, you can be affected by local situations arising due to factors beyond your and your dealer's control. Even your distributor may have change in his priorities and you may not always be on the top.
If he is uncomfortable, than you will have to use your skills to alley his fears and apprehensions. If you are on the Web, Your Company’s image enhances and he will also benefit from it and his interests will always be protected. Make commitments if you have to. Take special care as you cannot give up your past, present and future's trusted lieutenant just for some probable benefit in the future. He needs to be assured that no matter how many new people come in, old dealer will be the senior person in the eyes of your company. Remember that BOTH of you need each other and benefit from each other’s performance.
I am not interested in export since I am not even able to cater to the home market
This situation is good, but to get better prices and commercial terms, not to mention export benefits most countries give, try looking beyond your borders. Being holed up is not sound business practice and it is the job of industrialist to open new frontiers and make this world a global village. Pains of increasing the production capacity are nothing compared to gains you will receive with exports.
If you think, your geographical area of business is going to take time to warm upto Internet, Let me remind you, your area is not the limit on the Internet. In fact, Internet knows no limit at all. Think of yourself while surfing Internet. Does it matter to you whether the site you are seeing is in Berlin, Shanghai, Los Angeles, Melbourne, New Delhi or closer Home City in your country, or maybe even African Desert? It doesn't. Internet is a great leveler (something socialists always tried). It doesn't matters where you are and how big you are. All that matters is How you present yourself. And the main benefit of Internet is the new opportunities in hitherto areas you might not even thought of that it can charter for you.
I am not interested in export since my quality is not up to the mark
My question to you - If your quality is not good, how long do you think you can continue with this? My friend either improve your quality or better look for some other source of income. Your competitors are increasing by manifolds with increasing cross border trade your next competitor may not be your national slob, but some lean and mean business machine 10,000 miles away in the habit of eating of business from people like you. It probably has done this before in other countries and thank your stars you are not one of them. Better utilise this opportunity rather them crying when it is too late. Look at your national scene and prepare a timetable to change yourself for better. Remember that Better quality mostly rewards you with better prices and loyal customers.
Secondly, I would also advise to look for other markets that may not necessarily be European. Your product may actually be more suitable for some underdeveloped market (you can interpret it as some third world country) than what your European counterpart may be offering. You never know which door the opportunity may knock. Provide the opportunity as many doors as possible. Internet provides the door with largest area for knocking. But remember that opportunity is being provided with increasing number of door everyday.
